Kyle Pahlow – Cinematographer

KPC_logoWe couldn’t possibly be more blessed than to have Kyle Pahlow on the production team for Ad Astra. Kyle brings a unique mix a pure aesthetic talent, technical know-how, and work ethic that few creatives possess.

You can find Kyle’s samples and killer reel on the Kyle Pahlow Cinematography website.

Kyle is handling an Arri Alexa with a small set of Arri Prime Lenses for Ad Astra. In the future we will host a more in-depth Q&A with Kyle about his approach to filming this project. Until then, here is some additional info about our intrepid DP found on his website.

What inspires you?

Captivating stories; plain and simple. I love when the right ingredients come together on a shoot and everyone feels good about what they are doing in that moment. The discovery of  beauty and purpose in lighting that occurs naturally in the world and putting it away in my mind for later never ceases to inspire me.

What is the best part of your job?

Shots that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Working with awesome crews, made up of incredibly talented people has kept me hungry for more. I thoroughly enjoy meeting and working with new people everyday.

How would you describe your personal philosophy?

Life is about embracing constant change and striving to never stop growing. As it applies to my work, it’s important to appreciate the moments of beauty and success no matter how large or small.

What is the best lesson you have learned while shooting?

Story and content always come first. Also, to run hard, not scared.

How do you view technology in your field?

I’ve always felt that it is an exciting time to be coming up when so many leaps and bounds are taking place. However, I cut my teeth shooting 16 and 35mm film and can appreciate what has come before me. I think the most important thing is to never loose site of the fact that all these things should be regarded as tools to aid in realizing a final goal. No matter what, it will always be about fully taking in a director and producer’s vision, collaborating and listening to the story.

Do you enjoy traveling?

Wanderlust is defined as: A strong desire to travel. This is probalby the best way to describe me. I love to explore whether it be at home or abroad. Work has taken me all over the United States and to such remote locations as Mexico, Haiti, Central America, and the Dominican Republic. Lets just say that my passport is always current.

Overall how do you rank style?

As it applies to work and life, style is everything. I strive to light with a naturalistic approach while augmenting subtle elements in a scene.

What does the future have in store for you?

The beauty of it all is that no one can be sure. Most of all I want to continue to meet inspiring people who I can collaborate with on great projects.
